The difference between an essential reggae reissue and a craven ripoff usually comes down to two things: sound and packaging. This two-for-one reissue of Horace Andy's In the Light album (which includes dub mixes of all the original album's songs) is a classic example of the Blood & Fire label's loving devotion to both sonic and cosmetic detail. The sound is phenomenal; modern ears jaded by years of direct-from-vinyl remastering will be stunned by the clarity, definition, and sonic depth of these recordings. Andy himself is at the top of his form through most of the album, though not on all tracks; he'd have done better to leave the lover's rock stuff for someone else, and Do You Love My Music and Fever are far from essential. But he's at his best on such cultural roots excursions as Leave Rasta and In the Light, and in that genre he has few peers. His all-star backing band includes Leroy Sibbles, Horsemouth Wallace, and even Augustus Pablo on keyboards. Solidly recommended overall, with minor reservations.
