 la carte (pronounced /a la kart/) is a French loan phrase meaning "according to the menu", and it is used as restaurant terminology in one of two ways: 
 
It may refer to a menu of items priced and ordered separately, rather than selected from a list of preset multi-course meals at fixed prices, in contrast to a table d'hte, at which a menu with limited or no choice is served at a fixed price.  
It may designate the option to choose, at no extra charge, a side dish to accompany a main course item.  
This term also encompasses the general idea of purchasing only select items instead of a merchant's entire group of offerings, particularly in articles about cable television. Similarly, when selling music, it refers to the option of buying tracks from an album individually.
