Elaine Mahon grew up in the woods and on the beaches of North Central Florida. Mahon’s sensibilities, which stem from her exploration in the outdoors as a child lend an authentic voice to the poetic imagery invoked by her finely crafted story songs which cover a broad range of human experience. Her writing explores several recurring themes: resilience of the human spirit, the power of hope, the wonder of life, and a profound appreciation of our place in the natural world. Throughout her songs, whether of birth, death, struggle or survival, Mahon weaves the golden threads of hope and wonder. Employing captivating melodies, rich with harmonic nuance, Mahon’s clear and expressive voice delivers straight from the heart. Her songs are remarkably varied in terms of melody and subject matter, but are coherent as a collection due to the thematic threads running through them.
Elaine graduated with a Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of Florida (UF). However, when her postdoctoral appointment at UF reached the end of its term, she made the decision to stay in Gainesville, where she and her husband were deeply rooted. She turned her focus to songwriting and the recording of her first CD “Seamless.” Soon thereafter she was surprised and delighted to discover she was pregnant with their first and only child. Just one month before their son was born Elaine released “Seamless”. Following her son’s birth Elaine’s focus naturally shifted to motherhood, and “Seamless” remained un-promoted.
Now, 16 years later, Elaine has just finished recording a new collection of songs on her second CD “Rise”, which is scheduled for release in 2013. 
Lush but subtle instrumental and vocal accompaniment on “Rise” is provided by a carefully selected ensemble of players including multiple Grammy nominee Penny Nichols (harmony vocals and vocal arrangements), Jason Thomas of the Grammy Winning Claire Lynch Band on fiddle, and Hannah Alkire of Acoustic Eidolon on cello. “Rise” was recorded and produced at Gatorbone Studios in Keystone, Florida by Lon & Elisabeth Williamson who also lent their considerable musical talents to the project: Lon on bass, and Elisabeth on harmony vocals, banjo and high strung guitar. Other players on “Rise” include Gabe Valla on acoustic guitar, Tuck Tucker on Dobro, Dave Kelsay on percussion, and Kim Blackburn on harmony vocals.
Elaine Mahon continues to reside in Gainesville, Florida with her husband of 26 years, her son, five cats, and an axolotl. She is a founder of Sandhill Stage, a premier listening room, which promotes acoustic music. In addition to serving as coordinator for Sandhill Stage, Mahon is a founder and coordinator for Sandhill Songwriters Circle, a songwriter support group which holds benefit concerts for the two conservation organizations above.
