It's destiny, you see. On the very same day that I decide to revisit one of my favourite albums of the past few years, 'Commonwealth Tracks' by The Ghost Dance Movement (in the car, on a cold night, and on the way home from a Master Musicians Of Bukkake gig, a most appropriate set of circumstances), a little bird told me that there is the distinct possibility of new tunes being forged in the not too distant future.
This info has made my week. It is of the utmost importance, you see. If it doesn't seem like it to you, if it just seems like I'm going on inexplicably about a little German band with 467 listeners on last.fm who has been on hiatus for the past couple of years, much to my personal dismay, a band who has a total of four released songs (the totality of 'Commonwealth Tracks'), then you're probably wondering why I'm making such a big deal about it. If you are, then it's probably because you still haven't shivered as the first delicate notes shine through the slow-burning atmosphere after a minute or so of 'An Introduction To The Study Of T(w)ogetherness', or the way Malte Seidel's (he from the equally awesome Black Shape Of Nexus, yes) anguished-ridden distant scream fits perfectly, against all odds, with the quietly developing post-rock(ish) instrumental beauty. You probably haven't been hit by the whale-like instant impact of 'Something Hypnotic In The Kennedy Funeral Procession', a beast that suddenly morphs into contemplative melancholy halfway through, when the constant riffing and the punishing vocals start to seem too much to bear, just to pick up again for a truly epic finale. If you haven't, then you surely also haven't let 'If She Is Jacques Cousteau, I'm The Ocean' wash over you and grow and grow and take over you until the desperate climax seems to bring proceedings to a close, until you look at the track time and realize there's still five minutes to go, which repeat the same cycle all over again. Most of all, you haven't listened to the heart-stopping album closer 'Redshift (What Is The Color Of The Void)', one of the best post-rock/post-metal/atmospheric sludge/whatever songs ever, one which contains more mood shifts, emotions and great riffs than most generic bands of those genres ever bleed into their songs for their whole careers. You probably also haven't spent the 38 minutes that the album lasts staring at those song titles and figuring out all their hidden meanings are.
